The Pontiac GTO is one of the most important cars in American automotive history - widely regarded as the original muscle car that launched the entire genre in 1964. The original GTO (1964-1974) began when John DeLorean installed the 389 cubic inch V8 into the Pontiac Tempest against GM's policy - creating a mid-size car with full-size power. The 3rd generation GTO (2004-2006) was based on the Holden Monaro from Australia, using a 5.7L V8 LS1 (350 hp, 2004) and then 6.0L V8 LS2 (400 hp, 2005-2006). Though understated externally, the '05-'06 GTO with 400 hp and T56 6-speed manual offered exceptional performance value - faster than contemporary Mustang GTs and Dodge Challengers at a lower price. Only 41,809 of the final generation GTOs were produced, making them increasingly collectible.
